  26. It covers a lot about memory, installation, various graphics cards and 
  27. sound cards, gameplay issues, importing cities from other versions of 
  28. SimCity 2000, and hot keys.   
  29.  
  30. I. INSTALLATION
  31.  
  32. Video Selection 
  33. --------------- 
  34. The SimCity 2000 DEMO installer will attempt to figure out what kind of 
  35. video card you have in your machine. If it is not sure what kind of 
  36. video card you have, or the installer detects a VESA driver in memory
  37. (or in BIOS), it will default to the VESA SUPER VGA driver. You can 
  38. click on the arrow to the right of the VESA SUPER VGA entry for a list 
  39. of other cards that the installer thinks you might have. If your card 
  40. is on this list, you can select it instead of the default VESA driver.
  41. If the installer cannot figure out what kind of card you have and
  42. cannot detect a VESA driver, a large red warning message will be 
  43. displayed. If you wish to continue and try to run SimCity 2000 DEMO 
  44. anyway, you MUST load some type of VESA driver for your video card.
  45.  
  46. II. VIDEO CARDS
  47.  
  48. What Is A VESA Driver And How Do I Use It?
  49. ------------------------------------------
  50. VESA stands for Video Electronics Standards Association. It is a 
  51. standard that allows software companies to write programs that work
  52. on many video cards without having to know how each card works.
  53. The VESA driver is the program that handles this. Almost every video
  54. card available today has VESA drivers available for it. These drivers
  55. may be stored in a chip on the video card, or they may be a program
  56. that the user has to load by hand (or with a batch file). Some cards 
  57. (such as the Diamond Viper) have the driver on the video card, but 
  58. need the user to run a special program to activate the driver. During
  59. installation of SimCity 2000, if the installer detects a VESA driver in
  60. memory (or on the card), it will list VESA SUPER VGA as the default.
  61. You may also be able to select specific video support for your card if
  62. it is supported (we recommend using specific video support, if possible,
  63. for fastest operation). If the VESA driver is an external program, it
  64. will probably be found on the disks that came with your video card. 
  65. If you don't have a VESA driver you should contact your video card 
  66. manufacturer. We have included VESA drivers for most popular cards in 
  67. your SimCity 2000 directory. To find the particular driver for your 
  68. system, look in the SC2000\VESA directory for the subdirectory that 
  69. sounds closest to the name of your brand of video card. In that 
  70. subdirectory should be the VESA driver. Using most 'external' 
  71. (programs that you must run) VESA drivers is as easy as typing the 
  72. name of the driver at the DOS prompt. For instance, if the driver were 
  73. called VVESA.COM, you would type:
  74. VVESA.COM [ENTER]
  75.  
  76. ATI Ultra Pro or Mach 32 Video Cards 
  77. ------------------------------------ 
  78. If you have an ATI Ultra Pro or other card based on the Mach 32 chip,  
  79. you must run the included utility MW_ATIUP.EXE before playing  
  80. SimCity, for complete compatibility. 
  81.  
  82. Simply type:    MW_ATIUP [Enter] 
  83. then type:      SC2000   [Enter] 
  84.  
  85. to use your ATI card with SimCity 2000. If the MW_ATIUP program is
  86. not run, you may get an "ERROR 35" type message when trying to run
  87. SimCity 2000. MW_ATIUP.EXE can be found in the SimCity 2000 directory.
  88.  
  89. Diamond Viper
  90. -------------
  91. The Diamond Viper has its VESA driver on the card, but you need to
  92. run an external program to activate it. This program is called
  93. VPRMODE.EXE. To use VPRMODE to activate the VESA driver, type:
  94.  
  95. VPRMODE VESA [ENTER]
  96.  
  97. The VPRMODE program should have been installed by the software that
  98. came with the Diamond Viper card.
  99.  
  100. Trident Video Cards 
  101. ------------------- 
  102. Some older Trident video cards may not be compatible with the Trident  
  103. driver installed by SimCity 2000. If you installed a Trident video  
  104. card and are experiencing video problems, try running the INSTALL.EXE  
  105. program in the SimCity 2000 directory and selecting the VESA video 
  106. driver, then install the proper VESA driver for the card before running
  107. SimCity 2000.
  108.  
  109. III. MOUSE DRIVERS
  110.  
  111. Microsoft Compatible Mouse Required
  112. -----------------------------------
  113. SimCity 2000 requires a Microsoft-compatible mouse to run. Most
  114. mice today (including Logitech, Mouse Systems, and Kensington) are
  115. Microsoft-compatible. In order for the mouse to work properly in
  116. SimCity 2000, a mouse driver must be loaded before running
  117. SimCity 2000. The mouse driver must also be fairly current and VESA 
  118. compatible. Contact the manufacturer of your mouse or the dealer who 
  119. sold the mouse to you to see if your driver is the most current
  120. available.
  121.  
  122. IV. MISCELLANEOUS
  123.  
  124. Memory Issues
  125. ------------- 
  126. SimCity 2000 requires a lot of memory to run--4 MB total. On some 
  127. machines, even if you have the required 4 MB, SimCity 2000 may report 
  128. that you do not have enough free extended or conventional memory. If 
  129. this is the case, your best alternative is to create a boot disk as 
  130. outlined on page 6 of the SimCity 2000 DOS Addendum/Quick Start Guide. 
  131. Another solution that may help is to install SimCity 2000 with No Sound 
  132. and No Music selected. If you have already installed SimCity 2000, you 
  133. can change your current sound, music, and video settings by running the 
  134. INSTALL.EXE program in the SimCity 2000 directory. 
  135.  
  136. Running With QEMM, EMM386 And Other Memory Managers
  137. ----------------------------------------------------
  138. We recommend that you not load any memory managers or disk cache 
  139. utilities while running SimCity 2000, especially if you are using 
  140. DOS 6 on a machine with only 4 MB RAM. 
  141. If you are using a memory manager, you MUST NOT have it set in auto  
  142. mode--this will cause a conflict with SimCity 2000. 
  143. If you are using MS-DOS 6 and absolutely must load EMM386.EXE, 
  144. you will need to either have the EMS size set to 'noems' or larger 
  145. than 4096. See your DOS manual for information on how to do this. 
  146. If you are running QEMM in Stealth mode, SimCity 2000 may fail to
  147. recognize your VESA driver built into the video card BIOS. You will need
  148. to run in Frame Mode as opposed to Page Mode. To do this, change the
  149. "ST:M" parameter in your QEMM statement to "ST:F". See your QEMM manual
  150. for more information on how to do this.
  151.  
  152. Running SimCity 2000 Under OS/2
  153. -------------------------------
  154. We have successfully run SimCity 2000 under a DOS session in OS/2. We
  155. have not been able to run it as a migrated application. During
  156. installation, you MUST NOT swap the installer to the background. It
  157. must always be the foreground application until installation is complete.
  158. If you have OS/2 and are able to run SimCity 2000 under MS-DOS but not
  159. under OS/2, please call IBM Technical Support.
  160.  
  161. Creating A Boot Disk With Stacker/DoubleSpace
  162. ---------------------------------------------
  163. Stacker version 3.0 and earlier require certain drivers to be loaded in 
  164. the CONFIG.SYS file in order to mount the compressed hard drive.  When 
  165. creating a boot disk with Stacker 3.0 and earlier you must include two 
  166. lines in the CONFIG.SYS file.  The exact path is dependent upon where 
  167. you installed Stacker on your hard disk, but here we will provide the 
  168. path for the default installation of Stacker.  The two lines needed in 
  169. your CONFIG.SYS file are:
  170. DEVICE=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM C:\STACVOL.DSK
  171. DEVICE=C:\STACKER\SSWAP.COM C:\STACVOL.DSK
  172.  
  173. These lines will load Stacker and mount your compressed drive when 
  174. booting from the boot disk.
  175.  
  176. DoubleSpace and Stacker 3.1 do not require that lines be added in the 
  177. CONFIG.SYS file as they copy hidden files to the boot disk when using 
  178. the "SYS A:" or "FORMAT A: /S" command.  Make a boot disk according to 
  179. the normal instructions regarding creating a boot disk in your SimCity
  180. 2000 addeundum. If you do not feel comfortable creating a boot disk 
  181. under Stacker or DoubleSpace, contact STAC Electronics or Microsoft 
  182. for technical support.
  183.  
  184. V. TROUBLESHOOTING
  185.  
  186. I Get An "Error 35"
  187. -------------------
  188. This message usually shows up if you have certain ATI cards and have
  189. not loaded the MW_ATIUP program. See the ATI entry in Section II above
  190. for more information.
  191.  
  192. SimCity 2000 Locks Up
  193. ---------------------
  194. This is more than likely the result of a conflict between SimCity 2000
  195. and a memory-resident program that is being loaded in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
  196. or CONFIG.SYS files. The best solution to this is to create a boot disk
  197. as outlined in the addendum. If this does not help, try running the 
  198. INSTALL program in the SimCity 2000 directory and selecting No Sound
  199. Effects. If this doesn't help, call Maxis Technical Support at the 
  200. number listed on the Maxis Maxims card included in your SimCity 2000
  201. box.

  203. SimCity 2000 Install Program Crashes
  204. ------------------------------------
  205. This is also probably a conflict with a loaded memory resident program.
  206. Try making a boot disk as per the addendum. Ignore the "Bad Command or
  207. Filename" message that appears when using the boot disk for
  208. installation. Also try running the INSTALL program with no mouse driver 
  209. loaded. See your mouse manual for information on disabling the mouse.
  210.  
  211. I Get A "Microsoft Compatible Mouse Not Found" Message
  212. ------------------------------------------------------
  213. This message is usually the result of one of two problems. Most likely,
  214. a mouse driver has not been loaded. SimCity 2000 needs a DOS mouse
  215. driver to run (as opposed to a Microsoft Windows mouse driver). This
  216. driver along with instructions on how to load it should have come with
  217. your mouse. The less likely problem is that the mouse driver is being
  218. correctly loaded, but it is an older version that is not supported. You
  219. should contact the manufacturer (or dealer) of your mouse to get a more
  220. up-to-date mouse driver.
  221.  
  222. I Have A Diamond Stealth/Viper And Get Funny Lines On My Display
  223. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  224. This is a problem with SimCity 2000 and some early versions of the
  225. Diamond drivers. There are software patches available for both the
  226. Stealth and Viper to alleviate this problem. The Stealth patch is
  227. available as a software program called STLBIOS.EXE or as a hardware
  228. upgrade. For the Diamond Viper a software upgrade called VPRM202.EXE
  229. will contain a patch. All of these are available from Diamond.
